Enhanced quarantine and submission experience

Microsoft is currently working on improving the suspicious content submission experience for admins in all Microsoft 365 environments, as well as on enhancing the Quarantine file previewer, with the changes to be rolled out during September.

Microsoft 365 is a software bundle which provides three lines of subscriptions, namely Office 365, Windows 10, and EMS (short for Enterprise Mobility + Security).

“Submissions are critical in reporting suspicious content to Microsoft. They help improve the ML models to accurately detect malicious content,” says Microsoft on the update’s Microsoft 365 roadmap entry.

The improved suspicious content submission process which will be released during September 2019 for all Microsoft 365 environment and will allow admins to submit suspicious files, URLs, and emails to Microsoft’s security team for analysis.

Microsoft’s feedback to each of the submissions should be immediate as per the description of this in development new feature, making it a lot easier to identify and remove any rules either allowing malicious content or blocking legitimate content into tenants.

This improved submission experience was already shipped out to Office 365 customers as detailed by Microsoft’s Pragya Pandey back in July.

“The feedback provided by Microsoft will also offer valuable insights into configurations that may have caused a false positive or a false negative, reducing the time to investigate issues and improving the overall effectiveness,” said Pandey.

“We’re also making some improvements to quarantine experience for users. Prior to this change, the Quarantine file previewer only rendered text,” adds Microsoft.

The new and refined quarantine is designed to allow users to natively view the quarantined suspicious content, thus making it possible to give it a closer look before taking any further actions.

Detailed information on how to submit suspicious files, emails, or URLs to Microsoft for Office 365 scanning is available HERE.

Admins will first have to log into the M365 Admin Center or Security and Compliance Center as Global Admin, Security Admin, or Security Reader, and to click on the ‘Submissions’ node under ‘Threat Management.’

Office 365 malicious email analysis also enhanced

Microsoft also rolled out better analysis capabilities for Office 365 last month, allowing admins with access to Threat Explorer to both preview and download malicious emails for further examination.

A new email timeline is now available as part of Office 365 Threat Explorer to distinguish between multiple events being triggered for the same detected malicious email.

This greatly simplifies the hunting process by helping time wasted while focusing on multiple points of interest during the analysis.

Office 365 group renewal

Redmond also announced rolling out changes designed to streamline the Office 365 licensing technology for subscription-based Office clients, as well as a new user activity-based expiration policy for Office 365 groups released in private preview for select Azure AD Premium customers.

The Office 365 groups expiration policy is designed to add automated group lifetime renewals without user intervention and will help all Microsoft 365 admins to improve their groups’ lifecycle management once the feature is generally available.
